Stand with your feet about hip-width apart or use a staggered stance if that feels more stable. Point your feet in the direction you intend to move.

Bend at your hips and knees to reach the item while keeping your chest comfortably open. Your back does not need to be forced into a flat position. Instead, aim for a controlled, supported posture that feels natural and does not aggravate symptoms. Tighten your abdominal muscles gently, as though preparing for a light cough, and grip the object securely.

Lift smoothly by pushing through your feet and using your legs and hips. Keep the load close to your body, ideally around waist level whenever possible. Avoid jerking the object upward or holding your breath for a prolonged period. Exhale as you rise if this helps you maintain control.

Once standing, turn by moving your feet rather than twisting your trunk while carrying the load. Take short, deliberate steps. When setting the object down, get close to the destination, bend through your hips and knees again, and lower the item with control. Do not reach forward at the end of the movement just to save a step.

These cues are useful, but they are not meant to make you move stiffly. For a light object, a relaxed bend may be entirely reasonable. For a heavier or unfamiliar object, slower preparation and closer positioning become more important. The right approach depends on the weight, shape, frequency of the task, your fitness, and your current symptoms.

Common Lifting Errors That Increase Strain

The most common issue is reaching for an object that is too far away. This often happens when unloading a car trunk, reaching into a deep bin, or lifting from the back of a shelf. Bring the object closer first if you can, or change your position so you are not working at arm’s length.

Another frequent problem is combining bending, lifting, and twisting in one motion. This can occur when moving boxes from the floor to a nearby surface or passing items into a vehicle. Reposition your feet and face the direction of the next step before you lift or lower the item.

Repetition also matters. Even a modest load can become painful when lifted hundreds of times in a shift without breaks, variation, or proper workspace setup. If you perform repetitive lifting at work, speak with your supervisor about adjusting shelf heights, using mechanical aids, rotating tasks, or improving access to frequently handled items.

Finally, do not ignore a tendency to rush. Hurrying often leads to poor grip, shallow footing, and sudden movements. A controlled lift usually takes only a few extra seconds and may prevent weeks of discomfort or time away from work.

Build Capacity, Not Just Technique

Technique helps, but your body also needs the strength and endurance to meet the demands placed on it. The hips, legs, trunk, upper back, and shoulders all contribute to carrying, lifting, pushing, and pulling. If one area is weak, stiff, or painful, another area may compensate.
